AMA Hall of Famer Gary Nixon died, Aug. 5, at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., from complications related to an illness. He was 70 years old.
Born on Jan. 25, 1941, in Anadarko, Okla., Nixon’s racing career was marked by both extraordinary success and courage. Nixon’s perseverance and talent made him one of the most popular and most respected racers in the history of the sport.
During his more than two decade pro racing career, Nixon earned 19 AMA National victories and amassed over 150 Grand National finishes. He competed as a factory rider for Triumph, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha.
A memorial service has been announced for Thursday, August 11. Services begin at 11 a.m. at Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Rd. in Timonium, Md.
