Black Book: Powersports Values Appear to Have Reached Their Peak

While sales at the auctions have been steady, prices are not seeing much upwards pressure at the moment.

Last month, Black Book posed the question, “would values peak in early July as usual, or possibly continue to increase a bit more after their below average gains in June?” This month provides the answer, and values have definitely peaked for most segments as of now.

“Powersports values appear to have peaked for the summer, with three of the four on-road segments showing declines this month,” said Scott Yarbrough, senior analyst of motorcycle and powersports at Black Book.

While sales at the auctions have been steady, prices are not seeing much upwards pressure at the moment. The only on-road segment to see gains are the scooters, up just $13 on average.

Cruisers and street bikes are our biggest movers for July, dropping by 2.0% and 2.1% respectively. The domestic v-twins fared just a little better than their metric counterparts with a decline of 1.7% versus 2.3%. Also of note, the larger touring bikes are showing a touch more strength this month, and while they still dropped in value, it was by less than half what the overall segment did.

The off-road segments, normally strongest in the fall, are already showing small gains, with the ATVs up 1.3%, off-road bikes up 0.9%, and the utility vehicles up 0.9% as well, offsetting the drops for the on-road segments.
