Racers Set Sights on AMA No. 1 Plates at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Amateur National Championship

American Motorcyclist Association regional motocross champions and other qualifiers are poised to battle for national titles July 27 through Aug. 2 at the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by AMSOIL, in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

"For the world of amateur motocross, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is the biggest week of the year," said AMA Motocross Manager Kip Bigelow. "The riders who will line up here have raced the best of the best to earn their place among the country’s elite. Working with promoting partner MX Sports, we will provide a fair, fun and challenging program in a well-managed competition environment to showcase their talents and recognize class champions with AMA National No. 1 plates." 

Added MX Sports Director Tim Cotter: "It all comes down to this: the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by AMSOIL. From roughly 20,000 entries, the field is now set for the best riders in the country to race for national recognition. For the racers and families at Loretta Lynns Ranch, we’ll provide a second-to-none racing experience. For fans and friends at home, stay tuned to RacerTV.com to watch live coverage of the racing. Each of the 36 classes will be shown LIVE at least one time from Tuesday through Saturday with over 32 hours of live racing coverage." 

The AMA amateur national program includes 50 AMA Area Qualifiers and 12 AMA Regional Championships. Those riders advance to the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at the Loretta Lynn Ranch to race for AMA National No. 1 plates in 36 classes. The best riders compete for the coveted AMA Motocross Horizon Award, presented to the amateur racer poised for success in the pro ranks. 

Dating to 1975, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is one of the longest-running motorsports championships in the country. The success of the program, which has produced a long list of AMA Supercross and Motocross superstars, is unmatched. Riders who have progressed through the program include AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath, as well as current stars such as Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto and many more.
