Destination Dealership: Ghost Town Harley-Davidson

Originally opened in 2002 as a Satellite Retail Location connected to Lummus H-D, Ghost Town Harley-Davidson in Waynesville, N.C., became a full-fledged dealership in 2005. At that time, the shop also expanded from 5,000 to 15,000 square feet. “It’s not too big, it’s just like it ought to be,” said Gene Lummus. “It’s got personality.”

That’s true, but the store’s cozier aspects don’t deny customers any of the services they’d expect to find at any properly outfitted H-D shop.

Nestled in the lush North Carolina mountains, the shop is in a tourist region that‘s flush with outstanding riding roads including Route 129 at Deal’s Gap, 276 through the National Forest to Brevard, and 64 into the towns of Cashiers, Highlands and Franklin. It’s operated by Gene’s son, Travis Lummus, who has worked in various aspects of the industry, from wrenching and painting to piloting the Lummus race team’s drag bike to several championships. Ghost Town H-D, named for its proximity to a nearby Wild West-themed amusement park of the same name, is good place to know about if you’re touring in the Western North Carolina Mountains.

John Tisch, the owner of Motorcycles of Dulles, is a modest person. Despite the fact that he moves more motorcycles than most dealers on the Eastern Seaboard and his operation has a 4.9-star rating on Facebook and a 4.8-star rating on Google, he hastens to state that the success of the dealership is due to the vision of his now-retired partner, Ken Davis, and his great staff. “I can't take credit for this,” Tisch says. “We have a superb reputation in the industry and I am only one part of that. It's all the folks who work here who make this place.”
