Motorcycles and Powersports October Data

The changes in the powersports market this month are very similar to what we saw in September, so we are going to sound a bit like a broken record, for those of you old enough to remember a time before CDs and iPods.

The changes in the powersports market this month are very similar to what we saw in September, so we are going to sound a bit like a broken record, for those of you old enough to remember a time before CDs and iPods.

Activity at the auctions has slowed, the crowds are down, and many more units are going unsold. Leading the declines this month are the scooters at -4.3%, with off road bikes not far behind, being down -3.8%. The street bike and personal watercraft segments are each down 3.6% with the cruisers dropping by a slightly smaller -3.1%.

Dual sports are down by lesser amounts, -2.3% percent on average. Also, like last month, the domestic V-Twins are down much less than the overall cruiser market and a few, very few, units have actually shown slight increases in value.

The most surprising thing this month is that the ATVs and utility vehicles have also declined. Normally they would be increasing in value, and after last month’s weak, though still increasing performance, expectations were for a stronger showing by these vehicles this month. The ATVs are down -1.4% and the utility vehicles are down -1.1%.

The snowmobiles have only increased by .4% versus last month. Considering the overall weakness across the powersports market, these units may not appreciate as much as usual heading towards cooler weather, though an early snowstorm or two could change that in a hurry.
