Harley-Davidson’s First Quarter Earnings Rise Sharply

Harley-Davidson Inc.’s (NYSE: HOG) first quarter 2013 diluted earnings per share increased 33.8 percent on higher motorcycle shipments and continued improvement in operating efficiencies, compared to the year-ago period. First quarter net income was $224.1 million on consolidated revenue of $1.57 billion, compared to net income of $172 million in the year-ago period on consolidated revenue of $1.43 billion.

Harley-Davidson Displays Strong Fourth-Quarter and Full Year

Fourth-quarter income from continuing operations was $70.6 million on consolidated revenue of $1.17 billion, compared to income from continuing operations in the year-ago period of $54.6 million on consolidated revenue of $1.18 billion. Fourth-quarter 2012 earnings per share were $0.31, up 29.2 percent compared to EPS of $0.24 in the year-ago quarter. For the full year, Harley-Davidson income from continuing operations was $623.9 million on consolidated revenue of $5.58 billion, compared to full-year 2011 income from continuing operations of $548.1 million on consolidated revenue of $5.31 billion. Full-year 2012 EPS was $2.72, up 16.7 percent from EPS of $2.33 in 2011.

The company reported earnings per share of $0.59 for the third quarter of 2012, in line with company expectations. For the full year 2012, Harley-Davidson continues to forecast a 5 to 7 percent increase in motorcycle shipments compared to 2011. Third-quarter income from continuing operations was $134.0 million on consolidated revenue of $1.25 billion. Through nine months, Harley-Davidson income from continuing operations increased 12.1 percent year-over-year to $553.3 million, or $2.40 per share, on consolidated revenue of $4.41 billion.
