Initial shipments of the first augmented reality motorcycle helmets have been sent out to early supporters, including the first backers of SKULLY’s Indiegogo campaign, which recorded $250,000 in sales in the first 8 minutes, $1M in 45 hours, and went on to raise $2.4M, making it the most successful tech campaign in Indiegogo history.

The AR-1 has received DOT certification, meeting strict safety guidelines set forth by the Department of Transportation. The AR-1 features a lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate shell with laser-cut safety foam, to cradle the head and help absorb the impact in the event of a collision. DOT certification of SKULLY’s AR-1 is a major step forward for the helmet industry which has remained relatively stagnant when it comes to using technology to enhance safety.

Initial recipients of the DOT-certified AR-1 will work closely with the SKULLY team to provide feedback and help fine-tune the software before the remaining deliveries are fulfilled.

SKULLY performed Safety Lab tests for over a year to ensure crash performance exceeded DOT US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 218). As part of this effort, SKULLY has dedicated thousands of hours in R&D to ensure superior helmet performance to exceed safety requirements set for by the NHTSA and DOT. Beyond the safety requirements, the SKULLY Safety Lab has also conducted extensive tests on the electronics and software systems to ensure robust, safe performance in any condition.

The majority of SKULLY customers can expect to receive their AR-1 helmets just in time for the riding season (March-May 2016). This includes international customers.
