Kastar Hand Tools (an A&E Hand Tools brand) just unleashed both the 6-Spline Crankshaft Wrench for use on 2007 Harley-Davidson Sportsters and 2008 Buell model 6-spline engines, and the new 24-Spline Crankshaft Wrench for use on 2006 Dyna 24-spline engines. These reversible ratcheting wrenches are used for the rotation of the crankshaft and to check engine timing and parts clearance. A&E says the wrenches are custom designed to fit perfectly on the crankshafts listed in the above engines. Both are heat-treated and chrome-plated for durability and appearance, and come complete with E-Z Grip handles that the company says allow for more turning power with less fatigue to the hand.
Once we got that scoop from A&E, we were intrigued, so we shipped off a pair of the wrenches to the pros over at San Diego Harley-Davidson to see if they measured up to the hype. SD H-D’s Jason Orsborn says the tools are easy to use and convenient. He has only one critique, saying the 24-spline wrench is a bit weak at the end, presenting a bit of flex in the outer steel laminates. But barring that room for improvement, this tool will definitely find a place at his workstation. ”We will get a lot of use out of these tools in the shop,” says Jason. ”They’re a great way to get the job done easily, and I would definitely recommend this tool to other shops or customers who may have use for it.” Sounds like this handy pair should be on the shopping list of any Harley or aftermarket V-Twin service center.
