The ACAT Global Honda CBR600RR motorcycle that’s slated to set a new speed record during the Land Speed World Finals at the Bonneville Salt Flats will be at the SEMA Show Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in Las Vegas. The record-setting bike, piloted by Cathy Butler, will be in the ACAT display (booth number 36233) in the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Butler, riding the ACAT-equipped Van Butler Racing 2007 Honda CBR600RR, shattered the land speed record for gasoline-powered (class M-G) 650cc motorcycles by 10.364 mph. Butler set the new mark at 172.390 mph with no fairings or aero equipment.
Later, with the aerodynamic fairings installed on the Honda, Butler recorded a qualifying run at 183.050 mph, besting the record speed by .02 mph for modified partial streamlining gasoline 650cc motorcycles (class MPS-G), a standard set by Butler at Speed Week in August. While headwinds the following day prevented her from establishing a new record speed, her team learned how well ACAT’s technology worked.
ACAT Global manufactures the world’s lightest, smallest and most efficient catalytic converters substrates, according to the company. ACAT acquired all the technology and manufacturing assets of Delphi’s metallic catalytic converter division in 2010, after Delphi had invested $500 million over 20 years to bring its substrate technology to the marketplace.
“We were experimenting with the ACAT catalytic converter and we were setting records,” said Van Butler, owner of Van Butler Racing and Cathy Butler’s mechanic/husband. “We were pretty damn fast. Everyone has always thought that a catalytic converter reduces vehicle performance, but these particular CATs we were running were very consistent. There was no reduction in performance whatsoever on our bike.”
Also at World Finals, ACAT’s Joe W. Moch drove the ACAT Global Ferrari 575 coupe at a top speed of 216.133 mph in the Grand Touring Sports C (C/GT) class. Moch plans a return to Bonneville to take a shot at the C/GT class land speed record of 230.545 mph in 2013. The ACAT Ferrari will also be part of the company’s display at SEMA.
The ACAT Global booth at SEMA will be home to appearances by Playboy model and Cybergirl Carrie Minter Legree and Hustler lingerie model Brittany Herrera, who will sign special-edition ACAT Global posters Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 1:30–4 p.m., and also on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 12:30–3 p.m.
