According to a recent report in the York Daily Record, motorcycle dealers in Pennsylvania will now be able to sell motorcycles on Sunday. The current law prohibits bike sales but allows dealers to sell merchandise and parts on Sunday.

Pennsylvania to allow Sunday motorcycle sales

The law takes effect in 60 days. Current law allows the sale of motorcycle parts and merchandise on Sundays, but not bikes.

A law signed Thursday (July 7) by Gov. Tom Corbett gives motorcycle dealers the right to sell, buy and trade bikes on Sunday.

Though Pennsylvania’s blue laws still prohibit certain activities, like Sunday car sales and hunting, they’ve increasingly loosened, allowing for Sunday alcohol sales in recent years.

In the past, motorcycle dealers have argued that they’ve lost business to neighboring states, like New Jersey, due to the restriction.

"More than likely, we will start opening on Sundays once the law goes into effect," said Heather Goodwin, general manager of Laugerman’s Harley-Davidson in Manchester Township. "It will give the customers more of an opportunity to shop around more on days they have off."

Iris Kissinger of Don’s Kawasaki in Hallam said the law won’t change anything for her dealership, which opened in 1968.

Don’s Kawasaki is open Monday through Saturday. Customers, she said, can shop after work on one of the three evenings the dealership is open.

"If you can’t find a dealership that’s already open 50-some hours a week, I really don’t think Sunday’s the answer," she said. "I still believe Sunday is a day of rest. I think employees deserve that."
