Thömus Launches Lightest Electric Bike on the Market

The electric bike company also opened its first retail store outside Switzerland.

Thömus SA, a renowned Swiss bike company, debuted its all-new electric bicycle, the Swissrider: a lightweight and versatile electric bike that weighs only 25 pounds, making it the lightest electric bike available, according to a press release.

The new development is a milestone for Thomas Binggeli, CEO and founder of Thömus. “The Swissrider is an e-bike for life and is light enough to carry up the stairs or hang on the train without effort, yet it has enough power to ride with ease. Only a discreetly integrated control element on the top tube suggests this is an electric bike,” he said.

Thömus developed the Swissrider at its headquarters in Oberried, Switzerland, where Binggeli started bike production on his parent’s farm 30 years ago. Known for its innovation in pedal-powered vehicles, Thömus previously launched the Lightrider E Ultimate: the first e-mountain bike with Swiss drive specialists maxon, which is the world’s lightest dual-suspension electric mountain bike.

The Swissrider’s basis is its ultra-light, high-modulus carbon fiber frame with drive technology from maxon using the same technology found on NASA’s Mars Rover. “We were excited to partner with Thömus and are convinced that light e-bike drives have a lot of potential in urban life,” said Eugen Elmiger, CEO of maxon.”The Swissrider relies on sleek design, super-light construction and a natural electric tailwind from maxon. A promising package for this market.”

The Thömus Swissrider is available in dark red, sand or black. It is designed for all riding needs — with a mudguard, luggage rack and light integrated into the frame — and is equipped with fast road tires. The Swissrider can also be specified with wider gravel tires, straight handlebars or racing handlebars. As with every Thömus bike, components and equipment can be fully customized.

Binggeli dreamed of bringing Swiss technology and his passion for velomobility to the U.S. Starting in Los Angeles, he sees an opportunity to help reduce the city’s traffic and pollution, changing the city commuter landscape much as he did in his native Switzerland. The Thömus USA flagship store, located on Montana Ave. in Santa Monica, California, carries a high-performance selection of Thömus bike products while offering the distinctive Thömus experience of curated, tailored, custom, hand-assembled bikes to local riding enthusiasts for the first time.
