One rhetorical question was all it took for photographer Clay Enos to embark on a cross country summer tour of America on a Vespa scooter: “Why not?” So Enos hopped down to New York City’s Vespa Soho and geared up for a trip that will take him from the antebellum landscapes of Virginia to the glacial valleys of Wisconsin to the lonesome highways of Nebraska, onward through the Rocky Mountains and ending somewhere within the contrasting landscapes of Washington. Like any good two-wheeled tourer, Enos is truly attempting to discover the countryside. “The emphasis is on moving slowly and engaging the country that exists away from the freeways,” Enos writes on his website. Along the way he’ll refuel at restaurants that serve local, organic food, which he’ll locate at www.eatwellguide.org. “I can’t predict what I’ll see or who I’ll meet along the way, but the hope is I’ll be able to engage folks whose voices are as distinct and original as the landscape,” he writes. Enos began his trip July 4, and has begun posting photos; you can follow his progress on Twitter, Flickr or his blog, all of which are accessible at www.clayenos.com/vespa.
